‘…We walk by faith and not by sight.’ – 2 Corinthians 5:7
Have you ever been skating on ice when the snow is still picturesquely cascading about, slowing drifting from the sky? The ending of a movie called ‘Serendipity’ has this scene painted beautifully. I had that same experience but with one major difference - I was in a car. And I wasn’t skating, I was skidding out of control on black ice, down a hill into a corner. A corner which my car didn't negotiate. Fortunately God had his hand on the wheel and his eye on the road, and I walked away, car-less, but unhurt.
This memory reminds me of the Christian walk. Sin is the black ice lurking under the white inviting canvass of snow. It seems hard to imagine that something so beautiful and heaven made, like snow, could be so dangerous. But this is the very reason why we should always rely on God to be the compass in our lives, and not what we see. Our eyes can be deceptive, just ask Jacob (Genesis 35: 33-34) or Elisha (2 Kings 6:17). Like the psalmist David, we should strive to say ‘I lift up my eyes to the hills. - From whence does my help come?’ My help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth.’ (Psalm 121: 1-2 RSV).
Today, let that be our purpose.
As you listen to 'Faith First', help us to trust in Jesus to led us where He needs us to go.

Housekeeping details for you
The point of this short blog will become clear if you decide to use this reading in the way we intend it. Netherfield Seventh-day Adventist Church believes in healthy churches. You can see what that means if you head to the relevant Healthy Churches page of the website. We also want other churches to be healthy. That means you can join in our campaign to create healthy churches, with healthy people serving the people in those churches.
A healthy church is one where Jesus comes first. A healthy church is one where the people work together to put Jesus first. One thing we are doing is to join people together to spread that news. I would like you to look at our prayer partners page. This will explain how we want you to use this short devotional. Very basically we want you to find a like-minded Christian friend who you will join with to : choose to pray together every day, decide together on a way to serve other people together, to help them grow as Christians - and to invite the Holy Spirit into your life every day. This blog that you will receive every day simply gives a common spiritual purpose. If you are a newcomer and want to join the blog with this object in mind click here
