"And he saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Peter answereth and saith unto him, Thou art the Christ." Mark 8.29

For my job I have to wear photo identification with my name visible. The students love it when they realise that my first name is on the badge. They say to me,

“Sir, sir I know your real name!” to which I usually reply

“So do I, but you call me Mr Christie are we clear on that?!”

When I was at school I can recall the excitement of finding out the first name of my class teacher – not that it was a secret. But this information somehow made the teacher human.

Sitting now on the other side of the coin as a teacher a similar principle applies, in that the teacher is seen as an educator who has all the answers. Looking at it with a spiritual eye I am drawn to the fact that although we know Jesus was a carpenter because scripture tells us, his profession was not how he was identified. When he asked the disciples,

“… Peter answereth and saith unto him, Thou art the Christ.”

What would have been your response? A carpenter? That would have been right because indeed he was. Today what we do is our identity.

There is no challenge today just a question to ponder. If those around us were asked how would they respond? Would the word ‘Christian’ be in the description? I would hope so at least in my case. But if not have could we change that?

Our music today is by the 90's gospel band “Commissioned" and responds to the question 'Who do men say I am?'. Click on the picture to enjoy.

     Housekeeping details for you

The point of this short blog will become clear if you decide to use this reading in the way we intend it. Netherfield Seventh-day Adventist Church believes in healthy churches. You can see what that means if you head to the relevant Healthy Churches page of the website. We also want other churches to be healthy. That means you can join in our campaign to create healthy churches, with healthy people serving the people in those churches.

A healthy church is one where Jesus comes first. A healthy church is one where the people work together to put Jesus first. One thing we are doing is to join people together to spread that news. I would like you to look at our prayer partners page. This will explain how we want you to use this short devotional. Very basically we want you to find a like-minded Christian friend who you will join with to : choose to pray together every day, decide together on a way to serve other people together, to help them grow as Christians - and to invite the Holy Spirit into your life every day. This blog that you will receive every day simply gives a common spiritual purpose. If you are a newcomer and want to join the blog with this object in mind click here
